The choice of participants is done through a lottery, but still favoring the athletes who have already participated or those in possession of a good qualifying time. Runners can compete NYRR members of or participating in, or through the appointment of qualifications by some official running club. It is estimated that total have taken part in the 40 editions of the New York Marathon approximately 700,000 people.
The route: The race covers all five boroughs of New York City. It begins on Staten Island near the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge. The bridge, which is normally used only to transport vehicles, closed for the occasion. Within minutes after starting the bridge is crowded with runners, creating a majestic scene has become emblematic of the race itself.
